Can I run emake on Windows 7 but reference ElectricAccelerator agents that are running Windows Server 2008?

I vaguely recall you can install Agents on any Windows version regardless of the emake windows version.

Can I mix versions of Windows on agent and emake hosts or do they need to match? Is there a limitation on Agents running on desktop versions instead of servers (Windows 7 vs Windows Server 2008)?

Let's say I install all my agents in Windows 7 and run emake from Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008. Or, I install all my agents in Windows Server 2008 and run my emake builds from Server 2003 or Server 2008.

Are these supported configurations?

For your own sanity, I recommend using a homogeneous environment: one flavor of Windows on all machines.

However, generally speaking you can mix-and-match different flavors of Windows, with a few caveats:

  1. You should ensure that the tools used in your build work on all the platforms you use.

  2. You should at least try to match bitness -- either all 32-bit or all 64-bit, although you may be able to mix-and-match here too. The main issue is that registry virtualization may not work correctly if you mix bitness between the emake host and the cluster nodes.

  3. ElectricAccelerator does not support registry virtualization at all on Windows 2003 64-bit, so if your build modifies registry keys/values you will have to use a different variant.
